This post reaffirms my belief in and support of my local UMC. It also saddens me that the SBC has become so completely divested of the teachings of and the examples set by Christ. But it’s been a while since I’ve attended a SBC service… do they even teach about Jesus? Is he even mentioned anymore? I’m dead serious. Thank you Pastor Folkerth for all you do, not just what you say.
The DMN coverage of the SBC’s convention was hard to take. I didn’t read too much beyond the headlines, but is it really headline news that the SBC wants gay marriage reversed? What would be more interesting reporting is an investigative piece into how the various GOP leaning groups are working to get SBC (and other) churches to advocate for their views.
This is the most theological mic drop ever delivered via laminated neckwear.
Two lanyards walk into Dallas—one draped in patriarchy and punitive purity codes, the other in battered grace and radical welcome. One votes to erase; the other dares to embrace. One hides cruelty behind creeds; the other tries to live out mercy, even if the potluck casserole’s still bland.
To outsiders: don’t confuse the signage with the spirit. The Methodists didn’t just bring resolutions, they brought receipts. And a Gospel that still smells faintly of foot-washing and fire.
I remember when W.A. Criswell cried because he wanted a downtown garage.
He raised the money that day! In those days I was attending FUMCD and Bob Goodrich was the minister. I attended St Andrew’s in Oak Cliff for a while because they had a black minister. That was in the seventies because I got married there in 1976. I met my first husband there. He graduated and taught at Union seminary , he was fluent in Hebrew. It turns out he was crazy. We moved to New Orleans, and he head of The something of Christians and Jews.
One of the exceptions of the exceptions is Wiltshire Baptist.
I can talk and write books, but I was disappointed that the woman who listen to you ( Carol Ann or Carolyn)
My Mom ran into him one time at a doctor's office, and he smiled when she told him I was a Methodist pastor...but she decided not to say more past that.
The DMN printed my thoughts on this topic yesterday. “The mandate to invite in immigrants (Matthew 25:31-46) and to treat them as “the native born” (Leviticus 19:34) is well established in the Christian Bible in more than 30 passages. The conditions faced by our immigrant neighbors—children watching from their schools as their parents are dragged away, US citizen children with cancer being deported, immigrants without due process being sent to a dangerous Central American gulag—should be a priority for those of us who are Christians. The Apostle Paul in Galatians 5:13 wrote, “all the law is fulfilled in one word… you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
The Southern Baptist Convention is focused on eliminating marriage rights for same-sex couples and not on following Jesus’s teachings. Anyone who believes in inerrancy and Biblical authority should understand what we Christians ought to be prioritizing, and the SBC has made the wrong choice.”

Criswell was a neighbor to us, over on Swiss...
